New Thai airline recruits transsexuals as flight attendants

Thai media reported yesterday that a new Thai-based airline has hired three transsexual flight attendants among its first batch of 30 new hires.

It might well be a public relations exercise but it's still a step in the right direction.

Miss Tiffany 2007 winner Thanyarat "Film" Jiraphatpakorn is one of the airlines three newly hired transsexual flight attendants.Thai media reported yesterday that a new Thai-based airline P.C. Air has hired three transsexual flight attendants – the company's initial quota – alongside 17 cisgender women and 10 men among its first batch of 30 new hires. Among the three is Miss Tiffany 2007 transsexual beauty pageant winner Thanyarat "Film" Jiraphatpakorn.

The 23-year-old was quoted as saying: "At first I thought they would just take applications but not actually recruit us, as happened at other places before."

The company had recently conducted a roadshow accepting applications from "third sex" candidates, who have to check the "unisex" column in the application form, at Bangkok's Esplanade shopping mall.

An airline spokesperson was quoted as saying that the company recognises the potential of transsexuals to work as hostesses and hopes to offer equal opportunities to them. He explained that after passing the preliminary round, the transsexual candidates will undergo training along with female air-hostesses and will have a 'third sex' name tag pinned to their uniform to avoid immigration issues.

Despite their high profile in Thailand, transsexuals are unable to change their legal status, and often report that they are still stereotyped and are often unable to find work outside the entertainment and beauty industry.

The airline plans to launch flights on March 1.

Tanwarin Sukkapisit talks about his feature film that has been banned twice for the reason of being against 'public morals'

Let's forget the politics of s/he, his/her, bio/sociological _ the politics of trans _ she says. Man or woman, katoey or transvestite or cross-dresser or transgender, no matter the label, no matter what noun or pronoun, she doesn't mind. What Tanwarin Sukkapisit minds is why her latest movie was banned, twice, by the rating committee. What she minds is why the board believes her film, Insects in the Backyard, is a ''disruption of national order and public morals,'' according to Article 29 of the Film Act 2008. Why her film, and never, say, the slap party insouciantly displayed on TV every night?

''I feel like a terrorist,'' she says. ''I was just making a movie.''

Insects in the Backyard, a small film Tanwarin made with less than 500,000 baht, was shown at the World Film Festival of Bangkok earlier this month. Two weeks ago it was banned from general release by the rating committee under the Office of National Culture Commission. The board said it was because the film displayed a shot of a penis. They also said because it contains an allusion to patricide and prostitution. The fact that the board failed to give a consistent, comprehensible reason for the ban _ instead of handing the film the strictest classification, 20-plus, with ID checks at the door _ besides citing a formulaic clause from the law has heightened the frustration of the filmmaking community.

Then there was a complication that exposed the flawed implementation of the Film Act. Last week, Tanwarin and representatives of the Thai Film Directors Association went to lodge an appeal. But the board told them that when the director first submitted the film for consideration, she misplaced the information about the film's copyrights. So, technically, Tanwarin couldn't appeal, but she had to repeat the process of submitting the film to the board (and pay the fee again). On Wednesday the board passed the same verdict: once wasn't enough, Insects in the Backyard was banned twice in three weeks by the same committee.

''It's illegal to show a shot of a penis in a way that is against good morals,'' says Raksan Wiwatsin-udom, film lecturer at Chulalongkorn University and a rating board member. ''A shot of a penis is OK in itself, but not in the way the film shows it. This is obscenity.''

Insects stars Tanwarin as a father who paints the wall of his dysfunctional home lime-green and dresses flamboyantly in a gaudy gown of a cabaret singer, or a miserable 1950s Hollywood actress. His teenage son and daughter, in absence of their mother, call him Tanya and treat their dad like a cross-dressing older brother. Cast into the void of despair, the two teenagers slowly drift into prostitution; the boy rents his body out to men who like boys, while the girl enters a freelancer mode, in which her clients include men and women of all sexual inclinations.

In the film, there's a shot of Tanwarin masturbating with his penis visible.

''I didn't set out to make an aggressive movie with taboo-breaking images; not at all,'' says Tanwarin. ''There's a shot of a penis because we're talking about sexual problems, and that organ is part of the problem were talking about.

''What I present in the film is what I believe to be the problems that exist in society. There are married men who dress up as women and pursue homosexual interests, and there are students who engage in prostitution of various kinds. These things do exist in this country. They are social problems, especially the teenagers who find themselves lost and disoriented, and the film simply wants to tell their stories.''

Tanwarin, 37, a graduate in French from Khon Kaen University and a former English teacher at a northeastern college before becoming a filmmaker, says the issue she raises has stemmed from her interest in genderism, feminism, and the collective belief of society about human sexuality.

''There's a rigid boundary of what makes someone a man or a woman and that entails a list of social responsibilities,'' she says.

''When someone doesn't operate within that boundary, he's in trouble. But there are a lot of people who do not belong to those strict boundaries.

''Is Thai society open about gays and katoeys? Most people believe so. We're not arrested on the streets. Our rights aren't limited, and we can live fairly happily. But if you ask me if katoeys are accepted as part of the mainstream 'we' of society, I don't think so. We're still 'the others', the insects in the backyard.

''I'm saying this because that's what's happening. I'm not demanding anything. I didn't make the film to present my statement, I just made it because that's the story I wanted to tell. If katoeys are not part of the 'we' in society, so be it. I accept that fact and I'm fine with it.''

The fluidity of sexuality is a running theme of the film. The physical and psychological blur that the characters exhibit in Insects in the Backyard results in sexual preferences of various shades beyond the usual hetero-coupling _ including a scene of role-switching between a man and a woman _ and that might come across as disturbing to the committee who banned it.

Last year, a Thai film called Jao Nok Krajok (Mundane History) contained a shot of a young man stroking his penis. It received the 20-plus rating, without the board even asking for a warning caption.

This is not the first time Tanwarin's film ran into trouble with the watchdogs. Five years ago, he was asked to direct a straight-to-VCD movie called Krang Raek, or First Time. The film tells the story of a gay man who tries to conceal his identity, and of a group of misbehaving students and their budding sexual experiences. In the early 2000s, the business of straight-to-VCD movies was booming, with many producers testing the limits with softcore content. Apparently, in the official eye, Tanwarin's film strayed across that thin line. The film was never released.

The theme of homosexuality and taboo love may run close to her heart, but Tanwarin, who started dressing as a woman since high-school, or at least whenever she had a chance, is a filmmaker with a broader range of interest. Her first short film, Waen (The Ring), was named one of the 100 Thai Films Thai People Should Watch by the National Film Archive.

In 2008, his spontaneous, witty four- minute short called I'm Fine Sabai Dee Ka won the top prize at Thai Short Film and Video Festival.

In the film that comes across as a recorded performance art, Tanwarin, lip-sticked and made-up, locked herself in a cage on Ratchadamnoen Avenue, just a stone's throw away from the Democracy Monument. People stop by and peer into the cage, and Tanwarin responds to their curious gaze by repeatedly saying: ''I'm fine, don't worry, I'm a Thai citizen, so this is fine with me.'' It was one of the best films that captured the post-coup sentiment.

Earlier this year, Tanwarin directed an episode in the horror ensemble Tai Hong. While her next film will be a (straight) romantic comedy set in the Northeast, called Hug Sarakam.

''I've never positioned myself as a katoey filmmaker who makes film to support homosexual rights,'' she says. ''I think I've made films according to my feelings and interests at any given period. If you define yourself as a gay or katoey artist, sometimes you're just limiting yourself in your self-imposed boundary instead of just doing what you want to do as a human being.

''It's true that the image of katoeys and homosexuals in Thai films and TV series remain the jokers, the crazy, screaming comedians. I used to propose a gay love story to an investor, and they told me to make a gay comedy instead. Many mainstream movies about homosexuals are made from the male perspective. That stereotype remains something we should look into.''

Yet amid the erratic responses from the official view, the flawed world of movie ratings, and the covert marginalisation of homosexuals, Tanwarin realises that Thailand being Thailand, the kind of unpredictability she faces perhaps represents a form of bizarre wisdom that characterises this country and its definition of culture. In the past few years, Tanwarin has been hired by the Ministry of Culture, the agency that oversees the banning of her film, to lecture students in their various workshops on short filmmaking. And of course, she shows up in class looking like she looks in the picture on the front page of this publication.

''Well, when I was a college teacher, 10 years ago, I had to show up in class as a man,'' she says. ''Now they don't mind me teaching the students looking like this, which is good,'' she pauses. ''No, I don't know what it is, wisdom, an awkwardness or just hypocrisy.''

As much as the portrayal of gender diversity has been provocatively acknowledged by Thai audiences, Teerawat Thongmitr of Shade of Divas ladyboy troupe still hope for changes for the better, and more doors of opportunity becoming available for transgenderists.

"While male and female actors are commonly cast as different characters in showbiz, when it comes to transgender or transvestite roles, not many producers care to cast the actors. They usually just take the same old actors, let alone adopt scripts that would break the stereotypes involved with the issue," said outspoken transgenderist Teerawat, who prefers to be addressed as Tina.

At the end of last year, while performing a small showcase with her friends in Udon Thani, Tina began to take such thoughts more seriously, and the result was the birth of talented ladyboy group Shade of Divas.

Comprised of members with different career backgrounds - emcee, fashion stylist, former ladyboy band member - as the leader of the group, Tina explained that the idea of the project was also ignited by the fact that she found great talent among her friends, and uniting as a group could possibly gain the attention of others and offer them a chance at success.

"Most people have had very little contact with transgenderists or transvestites, and they usually assume that katoey work only as make-up artists or cabaret performers," she said. "But, actually we exist in various corners of society. Every year, many of us graduate with good degrees or possess great talent, but there are only limited careers available to pursue," said Tina, who received a degree in Fine Art and works as a graphic designer.

"We hope to create a group or an agency for transvestites and transgender women. For those film or television producers out there, if you are looking for a 'unique' katoey character, you know where to go now," said Tina, laughing.

On top of their full-time responsibilities, members of Shade of Divas have continuously been bombarded with offers for gigs, from modelling to dance shows. According to Tina, for such a new and small project, the feedback has been beyond expectations. Earlier this month, Tina fulfilled her dream by impersonating her admired diva Christina Aguilera as part of a promotional campaign in Thailand for the star's new album. But her most coveted offer came when German theatre director Nir de Volff was in Thailand to stage his debut physical theatre at Patravadi theatre early this year.

"Together with some friends from Shade of Divas, I attended the auditions for the show," said Tina. "Luckily, I was offered the chance. The experience of being part of the show was amazing."

Entitled Ministry of Truth, the performance was inspired by the famous reality show Big Brother, and has gained rave reviews and filled audiences. Tina was allowed to be herself and offered her ideas in order to develop the script with the other performers.

"The show centred around a mixed group of Thais and foreigners who shared days and nights together in a house, with one to emerge as the winner. My role was to express my thoughts on being a transgender woman. I found it fascinating for a show to dig deeper in the issue of gender, going far beyond the usual portrayal of ladyboys. As my first professional acting role, it was a great challenge, but I was so glad to be part of it," said Tina.

"More importantly, while working on the show, I learned to appreciate foreigners in the way respect you for who you are, regardless of your gender. If you have good ideas to share, they will listen to you," she added, noting that although Thai society is amazingly open about issues of gender, there is still a gap in equality to be filled.

"Working as a graphic designer, there have been a few cases where clients seemed to have liked my ideas, only to change their minds when they learned of my sexuality," said Tina.

After the groundbreaking success of the performance in Bangkok, Tina and other cast members of the Ministry of Truth travelled to Berlin last week as the show was commissioned to stage under its new title, On Air, at Tape Pub and Gallery, with the premiere scheduled for Friday.

"I feel lucky to have been given the chance to go to Berlin, I will see if any opportunities arise out of the Shade of Diva performances," she said.

At the photoshoot, Tina introduced 'Outlook' to the magnetic members of the group. An owner of flawless skin, a petite body and a little voice, Amatya "Lukpad" Chaiyakam, who is rather hard to imagine as a boy, was the first to share her story.

"When Tina told me about the Shade of Divas project, I thought it was a great idea to be able to work with our friends and start a strong community among transgenderists and transvestites," said Amatya, who was crowned the first runner-up at Miss Alcazar in 2005 and the winner of Miss Alcazar Lip-sync Contest 2008, marking her name among the top transgenderists in showbiz today.

Born to a Chinese family with a father who once served as a soldier, Amatya has been through a tough time fighting for her identity.

"My family runs an elephant show in Pattaya and when I was a little boy I helped my family business by riding an elephant and being a tour guide for foreign tourists. I was really good at it and, at that time, my parents thought I was going to be the one to continue the business in the future," recalled Amatya.

"It was very difficult at first. I began wearing make-up during junior high school. My family, my father in particular, couldn't stand it. We would fight often," she said. "I was very obstinate, and he eventually realised there would be no turning back for me, and stopped fighting it."

After years of guilt, she finally made amends with her parents. While competing in the Miss Alcazar beauty pageant, she took to the stage and apologised to her parents for the past and thanked them both for their support and understanding.

"Now, my parents introduce me as their 'daughter'," she said, flashing her sweet smile.

Besides being a member of Shade of Divas, Amatya is among the top performers at the Alcazar, one of the leading cabaret shows in Pattaya.

On the other hand, another member Tay "Taya" Peeraya, has a different background story.

"I was blessed for never having to struggle to be who I am," said Tay. "My family has always been very supportive."

While completing her degree in Textile Design in Australia, Taya followed her friend to attend another renowned transgender beauty contest, Miss Tiffany, and ended up with the first runner-up title in 2005. Shortly after, Taya became a member of Thailand's first ladyboy group, Venus Flytrap.

"I have always love singing and dancing, so being part of the group has been a great experience," said Taya, who currently works as a presenter of an entertainment programme on cable network Live TV's Fame Channel.

This year, her contract with the group has reached the final chapter, however, with the emergence of Shade of Divas, and Taya hopes to be able to do more of what she loves doing with her dear friends.

While the group is waiting for the completion of its official website, Shade of Divas can now be reached at its temporary house, http://www.facebook.com/shadeofdivas. And, an opportunity for other transgender women and transvestites to become new divas is now open.

"Although, all our members have been through a beauty pageant, it is not a prerequisite to join the team. What we need most is talent," explained Tina.

"To make others understand and accept us, we must show them our capabilities," she added. "And one day, a change for the better will come. Who knows? In the future, a member might be the first transgender women to play a born-woman character."

ngual talk overshadows the universal language of dance, but 'Truth' is told
The Ministry of Truth" - with its commentary on the TV reality-show culture typified by "Big Brother" - was a triumph for Israeli choreographer Nir De Volff and Ido Portal and Elik Niv of his Berlin-based Total Brutal Dance Company.

All three have been in residence at Patravadi Theatre since late December thanks to the Goethe Institut Thailand and coordinator Jitti Chompee.

The final performance last Saturday of the show they created demonstrated just how much can be accomplished.

The Israeli director created a strong, six-member ensemble - his compatriots along with Thais Lerwit "On" Sungsit, Amata "June" Piyawanich, Rachanikara Kaewdee and Theerawat "Tina" Thongmitr.

De Volff knows how to use his performers to the fullest effect, in accordance with the message and the style of the performance, such as Leng's acrobatics and On's musical skills.

Assembled like "house guests" in a reality-show-style bubble - in this case the Ministry of Truth, complete with pool, ping-pong table and showers - the cast members used their real names and mocked how exhibitionistic truth is sold on television - as well as how much we love watching it.

The performance would have been wilder and had bigger appeal for the Bangkok audience if De Volff had done some research on "Academy Fantasia", which is quite different from "Big Brother".

Interestingly enough for a performance billed as dance theatre, the messages were conveyed mostly through bilingual dialogue and English narration, not physical movement, and herein lies a problem.

When the Thais were together, they spoke Thai, and when the Israelis shared a scene, they spoke English. The problem was that almost half the audience was expatriates who knew little Thai, while the Thai viewers weren't that strong in English.

Besides, English was the second language for all of the performers, so sometimes the lines weren't spoken realistically. Add to that a flawed sound system and many viewers were struggling to understand.

The result - attention being drawn to other performers elsewhere - reminded me of reality-TV producers using split screens to watch the action in different places simultaneously.

Otherwise, the audience waits until some conflict arose so they could witness some nifty and invigorating dance choreography, with vibrant live music by Suriya Phuengthongthai on an electric guitar in front of the stage.

This, again, mimicked viewers' anticipating the impromptu fights that break out on TV, especially among characters with opposite traits who are bound to collide in such a confined space.

The show's 55-minute running time also made it feel like a TV programme, and limited the time needed to get to know the characters.

Important issues, like the Thai sex industry and homosexuality, were touched upon, but never addressed in detail. Once again, it's like TV, not life - one of the reasons people these days have abbreviated attention spans. We're more interested in short-lived excitement and simulated truth than long-lasting meaning.

Flawed strategies emerge on a TV debate about 'transgender woman'

Whether you agree with her or not, former Miss Alcazar "Nok" Yollada deserves thanks for raising important questions in a recent TV debate on "transgender women" that became the talk of the nation.

What makes a woman? "One is not born a woman, but becomes one," Simone de Beauvoir famously proclaimed, even if the Thai word phet makes no distinction between her anatomical or social origin.

Society defines womanhood and decides who fits the role, but the question is how.

Is being born with female genitalia requisite? Nature won't be so easily categorised, and people are born with the genitals of both sexes, or neither, more often than you might think.

In fact, any of the presumed "female" characteristics - vagina, ovaries, breasts, menstruation, XX chromosomes, oestrogen, the ability to get pregnant - can be absent in a woman, whether by birth, age, design, medical procedure or accident.

This contrariness makes a precise definition of a female elusive, as in last year's case of South African athlete Caster Semenya.

If physical categorisation is far from being clear-cut, a mental classification is nebulous. There have always been those who feel they're women trapped in men's bodies or vice versa, and it's not "all in their minds". A recent study suggests that transgenderism has at least some genetic components.

What is defined by society can thus be redefined by society, according to changing times and circumstances. It wasn't that long ago when women had little chance of financial or personal independence.

They broke free and, just like these born-female rebels, there are born-male converts - the so-called transgender women.

Nok Yollada knew she was meant to be a woman and, not content to merely cross the gender line, she fully became one with the help of sex-reassignment surgery. She is now, anatomically too, a female.

She's not just a transgender, but more specifically a transsexual, and she also has a lofty vision. She hopes that all post-operation transgenders will one day be accorded the rights of women, most importantly the right to legal recognition as such

For her clear sense for equality, she has my respect. I can't say the same for some transgenders in the TV debate whose beliefs are self-defeating. One even said the movement's political focus should remain on issues like HIV/Aids and "youth castration", rather than quality and legal recognition.

Unfortunately, Yollada had two serious flaws in her argument.

First, she spectacularly failed to explain why legal recognition is important. Not having legal documents to match your new gender (such as a national ID card for the bank or a passport while travelling) is a big problem.

Viewers might have been forgiven for assuming she was asking to be called "Miss" only to win social acceptance - or to stoke her ego.

Second, Yollada will get nowhere basing her argument on a World Health Organisation classification that lists transsexualism among psychological disorders. She'll be seen not as a woman but as mentally ill.

The WHO's diagnosis of these "gender identity disorders" has a price tag in term of stigma and discrimination that not all transgenders are willing to pay.

The WHO definition is trouble. It's partly designed to offer trans people in developed countries the hope or expectation of subsidised gender-based healthcare, especially sex-reassignment surgery.

But if transgenderism is really a psychiatric condition, it could be argued that it should be treated with psychiatric drugs. Sex-reassignment surgery, people could then say, would leave the root of the condition untreated and maybe even make it worse.

Basing her argument on conflicting medical opinions rather than solid principles of human rights, Yollada also opened herself to attack by the guest physician, a cytologist who wasn't necessarily an expert on sexuality. The doctor insisted that gender is determined only by sex chromosomes.

Again, remember Caster Semenya.

By then it was too late for Yollada to denounce the WHO classification, which is already losing ground. France last month became the first country to de-list transgenderism as a mental disorder.

Undoubtedly, many countries will follow suit, and then the WHO, as it did with homosexuality in 1992.

When that happens, what will the effect be on Thai transgenders? This is an interesting question, and we'll return to it next week.

'The Ministry of Truth' is a theatre satire of the TV reality show 'Big Brother'

Although its grandest mission, Fringe Festival 2010, recently lowered its curtain last month, the renowned Patravadi Theatre continues to maintain its reputation as a space where international artists and locals meet. And this week, Tel-Aviv-born artist Nir de Volff will offer local audiences his directing skills in physical theatre with a live performance of The Ministry of Truth.

Hailing from Berlin, where he is now based, De Volff's company Total Brutal is widely known on the international performing art scene for its outrageous and aggressive choreography that combines physical expression and body contact to create intensity and strong energy for the characters on stage. For this production in Bangkok, De Volff said he has been in Thailand since December to create a workshop to search for local dancers capable of performing in his style.

''It has been almost three months since I arrived in Thailand. I first started by hosting a workshop with Thai dancers. The workshop was well accepted as we had 45 people registered,'' said De Volff.

To accompany two male performers from Israel, de Volff selected three performers though his workshop. However, his idea before landing in the City of Angels was to have a chance to include the character of a ladyboy in his work.

''At the end of the workshop, we had a talented male actor who works in a theatre in Bangkok, a female dancer and a male acrobatic dancer, together with the two Isrealis. Then we organised a meeting with ladyboys to search for a special one with a unique character, not one of those who is always out in clubs and only cares for Chanel,'' he said, laughing.

''Then, during the meeting with a few ladyboys, we found Tina. She is a graphic designer and she can act. So, she is not a typical ladyboy, in that sense. On the other hand, she is a normal human being.''

During an exclusive interview with Theerawat Thongmitr, or Tina, she revealed that she was slightly hesitant in the beginning, wondering if her character would turn out to portray ladyboys negatively.

''I find this chance a challenge, but at first I wasn't sure if I'd made the right choice. But the character in this show allowed me to be myself and I can say that it is not just another show with a katoey character,'' she explained.

Although the inspiration of the show derived from the TV reality show Big Brother, its title, The Ministry of Truth (changed from the working title ''On Air''), rather came from George Orwell's novel 1984, in which the term Big Brother also features as a character of a totalitarian government.

''I only take the style, the familiar setting from the Big Brother TV show, but the content of my work is the opposite. It is closer to the idea of war and peace in George Orwell's book,'' he said.

With performers from Thailand and Israel, the key messages in this piece are in dialogues that touch on controversial issues of freedom and war, gender and cultural clashes. Living under the same roof in The Ministry of Truth are six housemates trapped in voluntary incarceration, in which they share exchanges and express their emotions physically through choreographic movement and verbally through brain-tickling conversations.

''Metaphorically, the process of watching this show is like getting drunk then you get hit in your face. As for my own impression, I see the direction of art here is on the same nice level. So here I am offering a different kind of show, something real and open for an argument,'' De Volff concluded.

Through special coordination by the producer of the show, Jitti Chompee, who is also veteran dancer and choreographer, 'Outlook' was given a brief background of the project, as well as exclusive photographs during rehearsal and a sneak peak for the shows.

''I do believe that there are many gifted Thai dancers and artists out there. And what I can do is find a way to offer them inspirational performances from overseas, instead of the typical commercial shows,'' said Jitti, who received loud applause last year for his choreography for a contemporary dance performance of Carmen.

''Thanks to Goethe-Institut Bangkok and Patravadi Theatre, I could continue bringing artists to stage a good show for audiences. And this special work by De Volff is definitely not to be missed,'' Jitti added.

Although there exist slight local variations among the many international versions of the successful "Big Brother" concept of evoluntary incarceration, the basic structure remains constant:
"House guests" move into accommodations especially constructed for the show, where each of their actions is recorded by cameras and microphones and any contact with the outside world is strictly prohibited. in some countries reading and writing are forbidden, only the Bible, the Torah or the Koran are allowed. The last taboo left standing in this human zoo is the privacy of the act of defecation.
The core of the show and its entertainment value for the audience lie in the petty conflicts and psychological warfare among the house guests. Mistakes and weaknesses are played out, or openly criticized and ridiculed within the group. In order to win, the participants celebrate the total emotional and psychological exposure of themselves and their cohabitants; extreme emotional situations that culminate in temper tantrums and crying fits ensure viewing quotas and raise expectations for an enthusiastic audience participation in the weekly "who-is-in-and-who-is-out" voting ritual.

Gone are the times when an average citizen who presented himself on television could there by show off his knowledge or abilities, or at least the skills of his trained pet. The cameras now installed in the television zoos are merely intent on capturing the next emotional breakdown, the next act of verbal abuse, the next cat-fight or the next crying fit to raise the viewing numbers

The Ministry of Truth brings together western dancers and local Thai ladyboy, dancers and actors into this contemporary human zoo, present Gender and culture clashes.

Taiwanese model Alicia Liu (Xun Ai) has admitted that she is a transsexual.

The 24-year-old model-cum-actress, nicknamed Xiao Ai, said she underwent sex-change surgery at the age of 18.
“My ex-boyfriend paid for it,” she said in an interview with a Taiwan magazine on Friday.
Liu, whose original name was Zi Hua, became popular following her appearances on a parody television programme.
She was described as having a face as innocent as an angel with sexy curves and a sweet voice.

She is 171cm in height and weighed 50kg with a vital statistics of 34C-25-34.
Liu’s “real” identity was exposed when a schoolmate a year her junior revealed her “secret” on the Internet recently.
The schoolmate had also attached a photo taken from the school’s graduation album, in which Liu was placed in the male category.

After that, Liu called for a press conference to state that she was happy with her current name and identity.
“As far as I can remember, I love being a woman. The past is not important,” she said while showing reporters her identity card, which stated that she is a female.
She neither denied nor admitted the rumour at that press conference.

However, on Friday, a week after the press conference, she admitted that she was a transsexual, reported China Times.
Liu said she had always been treating herself as a woman. She wore a skirt to school and used the female toilets.
She had five boyfriends and it was her second lover who paid for her operation.
The model also said she had a normal sex life like any other women. Some of her ex-boyfriends did not know of her true gender.
Her fifth lover, also a model, had shouted vulgar words upon finding out that she is a transsexual.

She thanked her family for their support.

Dana International
Dana International, the most successful Israeli singer since Ofra Haza, grew up as Yaron Cohen: the musically talented son of a blue-collar family in Holon. In the early ’90s she became part of the gay and drag scene in Tel Aviv. Aged 21 she traveled to London for a sex-change operation, and her debut album was released shortly afterwards. In 1998 Dana International made history when she won the Eurovision Song Contest. Her success has set a powerful precedent for marginal communities – not only in Israel, but all over the world.

Who are your Tel Aviv heroes?
Alexander Penn, a poet who lived on the fringes of society. He was a tall and handsome boxer, who knew how to throw a mean punch and also craft a beautiful verse. One of my favorite lines of his is 'it was gloriously awful'

What was the greatest event that happened in music in the last 40 years?
The internet. It changed the rules of the music industry. The traditional model of selling songs collapsed, music became much more accessible. Now, you can sit in your living room and watch music from every era and every country, in every language. It’s a wonderful revolution for music lovers and a disaster for people who make a living through music. But in time it’ll settle down, and everyone will learn to live with the market forces – they’re unstoppable.

What was the defining event that led you to choose your profession?
I’m four years old, and I’m standing on a chair in the living room with a long towel wrapped around my head, which is meant to be the blonde hair of the most successful singer in Israel, Ilanit. I sing her song from the 1973 Eurovision contest: ‘We will find the garden, the garden of love…’ the audience is comprised of my whole family, including my elderly grandmothers, and they all clap and compliment me. At that moment my heart tells me that I want to do this forever. I sneak away to peek at my reflection in the bathroom mirror, and when I see how good I look with the long towel – I decide then and there that I want to be a female singer.

What’s your favourite place in Tel Aviv?
As a child I lived across the street from the old cemetery on Trumpeldor Street, where all the dignitaries of Tel Aviv are buried. Every time I felt depressed or wasn’t sure how I’d make it in this strange world, I’d run away to the cemetery. I had a regular spot there, near the grave of the poet Haim Nahman Bialik, and I’d lie there for hours, revelling in the peace and quiet that was missing in my life. I don’t go there any more, but I still feel that it’s my own private space.

What has been the peak of your professional life, so far?
If I must choose one moment, it would be hearing my mother cry over the phone, after I won Eurovision. I was in England and she was in her living room in Israel, in the same place where she had cried over me so many times before, but those had been unhappy tears. Her tears of joy were perhaps the best thing that my career brought about.

Transgender group calls for changes

Network chairperson Yollada Suanyot said yesterday they had received complaints from transgender students, alumni and lecturers about the regulations, which she believes stem from society's misunderstanding of transgender, identified medically as transsexuฌalism.
She claimed people with transgender inclintion needed therapy before undergoing a gender change and to dress and live according to their sexual inclinations.
She said the universities' dress code violated their rights and obstructed the treatment of transsexualism. As a result, she said, many transgender youths did not want to study further.

The Network of Transgender Women of Thailand has urged the Education Ministry and universities to cancel regulations forcing transgender persons to wear male uniforms to classrooms, exams and graduation ceremonies.

Yollada said the network had submitted an appeal to Education Minister Jurin Laksanawisit on Wednesday. However, Jurin said he hadn't yet received it and would look into the issue today.
She added that the network had asked the Royal Household Bureau if transgender people could wear female uniforms in a graduation ceremony. They were told the bureau did not limit people's rights and that they should contact the Education Ministry and universities about the matter, she said.
Thammasat University (TU) vice president Parinya Thewanaruemitkul said his institution didn't object to transgender students wearing female uniforms - but those who hadn't undergone a gender change could not stay in girls' dorms or use women's toilets.
Parinya said universities would be willing to comply with a request by the Royal Household Bureau or Education Ministry.

Harisu says no to suicide and opened Mix-Trans Club

With the recent suicide of former President Roh Moo Hyun, Korea's most famous transgender celebrity, Harisu, has reached out to prevent suicides among transgender talents. Harisu said "I wish that there will be no more transgender suicides" and Harisu opened a club last month in Apgujeong-dong to provide a fun, safe atmosphere for transgendered.

On the 13th, 'Mix-Trans Club' was established. Recently, there were two up and coming transgender entertainers, one known as the "Harisu Part 2," Jang Chae Won, and another up and comer who had a 'coming out' and received such severe backlash, Kim Jihoo, both committed suicide. Harisu said, "My heart was broken upon hearing the news of the suicides of my friends and colleagues. I wanted to make a beautiful place for people to come together after coming out and suffering the same pain."

So far Harisu's collected a small group of 20 members to create the 'Mix Trans' performance group.

It's a very nice thing Harisu is doing for the twenty some people in the biz... but who will do anything about for the former presidents and other straight, one-gender celebs? Where is their club?
